There is a chemical fire at a chemical resin factory on Coulson Way in Canning Vale.
Potentially irritating smoke is blowing from Coulson Way along Roe Highway in a north eastern direction towards Spencer Road.
Hazardous chemicals are on fire inside the factory. A smoke plume is impacting people in an area bounded by Yale Road, Spencer Road and Nicholson Road.
An alert has been issued to people in the suburbs of Langford, Lynwood, Canning Vale, Thornlie, Parkwood and Beckenham.
The smoke does not pose a threat, but may cause irritation. People affected by the smoke should contact their doctor.
WHAT TO DO:
• People in the area should remain inside, out of the smoke or fumes, with doors and windows closed. Air conditioners should also be switched off.
• People should stay away from the area. If you are already in the area take advice from emergency services personnel.
• People with medical concerns should contact their local doctor or call Health Direct on 1800 022 222.
ROAD CLOSURES:
No roads are closed.
Motorists are asked to avoid the area and be aware of emergency services personnel working in the area.
ChemCentre and the Department of Environment and Conservation’s (DEC) Pollution Response Unit are conducting air monitoring and analysis.
DEC officers are conducting further tests to determine any environmental impact.
WHAT FIREFIGHTERS/SES ARE DOING:
Career Fire and Rescue Service firefighters, including nine appliances, are on the scene. They have contained the fire to the factory.
