Personal Protective Clothing & Personal Protective Equipment

This webpage provides essential guidance to support frontline operational DFES personnel in the care, maintenance, and inspection of DFES issued Personal Protective Clothing (PPC) and key items of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as gloves, helmets, and footwear. Where possible, these videos have been aligned with international standards.

Personal Protective Clothing

DFES Personal Protective Clothing (PPC) is designed for the dynamic and often unpredictable environments encountered during emergency response. It provides enhanced visibility and protective coverage against a range of operational hazards.

Correct garment sizing (fit to form) is the first step in ensuring effective PPC protection. When measuring garment sizes prior to ordering, personnel should be assisted by another person using a soft tape measure marked in centimetres. Manufacturer sizing documents and DFES fit to form measurement videos are provided below. DFES also offers made to measure options as an alternative to standard sizing to accommodate all body forms. Further information is available through your BGU/Station chain of command.

To maximise protection during emergency response, PPC must be worn as a complete ensemble. Attention must be given to the interfaces between PPC and PPE to ensure continuous and adequate coverage. Once personnel receive their PPC, and throughout its life cycle, they must inspect it for correct functional fit, sound operational condition, and proper interfacing with other items of PPC and PPE.

Functional fit is assessed through a series of movements that demonstrate adequate interfacing between PPC and PPE (fit for function). Videos demonstrating fit for function requirements are provided below and show the correct interface between garments and items such as gloves, footwear, and helmets.

The PPC inspection videos shown below align with international standards and demonstrate the minimum requirements for completing advanced and quarterly PPC checks, ensuring garments remain in a safe and serviceable condition.

Personal Protective Equipment

Emergency service response is an intrinsically hazardous undertaking, with limited capacity to manage hazards in workplaces that are not under our control. Therefore, PPE must always be utilised to supplement and augment other means of hazard control to further minimise risk of injury, particularly where other hazard control measures are not feasible or cannot be implemented immediately.

A series of PPE inspection and cleaning videos are provided below, demonstrating how to inspect and clean items such as footwear and helmets. These resources support DFES personnel in maintaining the operational fitness of equipment by showing the correct inspection procedures in line with international standards and the process for quarterly PPC checks.
