Blue Alert for Kuri Bay to Oombulgurri

A BLUE ALERT is current for people between Oombulgurri and Kuri Bay including the communities of Oombulgurri, Kalumburu, Mitchell Plateau and Kuri Bay.


You need to prepare for dangerous weather. Secure or remove loose material from around your home. Ensure your emergency kit is complete and check your family knows what to do.


CYCLONE WATCH is current for coastal areas from Cape Leveque to Kuri Bay.


You should prepare your home inside and out. Keep up to date with the development of the cyclone through radio, television or the internet.



At 8am Tropical Cyclone (TC) Laurence, Category 1, is estimated to be 250 kilometres northeast of Kalumburu and 505 kilometres northeast of Kuri Bay.


It is moving west at eight kilometres per hour and is expected to move west or west southwest closer to the north Kimberly coast.


Gales with gusts up to 100 kilometres per hour are expected to develop on the north Kimberley coast tonight.


Destructive winds with gusts to 130 kilometres per hour may develop between Kalumburu and Kuri Bay during Tuesday morning as the cyclone moves closer to the coast.


Heavy rain is expected in the north Kimberley region later today or Tuesday if the cyclone moves closer to the coast.
