Red Alert for Koolan Island and Cockatoo Island
Wednesday 16 December 2009 – 7:10 PM

A RED ALERT is current for people in or near the communities of Koolan Island and Cockatoo Island.

You need to go immediately to the strongest safest part of your shelter. Keep your emergency kit with you. Stay away from doors and windows that should be closed. Take your relocation kit with you if you have been advised to relocate.

Please note: Derby will be placed on Red Alert at 9pm.

The Derby Civic Centre on Loch Street will be open at 7pm.

People who have decided to relocate should take their relocation kit, including their emergency kit and essential medicines.

A YELLOW ALERT is current for people in the communities of Cape Leveque, One Arm Point, Djarindjin, Lombadina and Derby.

You need to take action and get ready to shelter from a cyclone. Fasten all cyclone screens, secure boats, caravans, trailers, garden sheds, outdoor furniture, rainwater tanks and LPG bottles. Move vehicles under cover. Ensure pets and animals are in a safe area. Pack a relocation kit to be taken with your emergency kit. Be aware that shops will now be closing.

CYCLONE WATCH is current for coastal areas from Beagle Bay to Bidyadanga including Broome and extending inland towards Fitzroy Crossing.

You should prepare your home inside and out. Keep up to date with the development of the cyclone through radio, television or the internet.

ALL CLEAR is current for people in or near Mitchell Plateau and Kuri Bay.

Wind and storm surge dangers have passed but take care to avoid the dangers caused by damage such as fallen powerlines, trees, broken water and sewerage lines, loose roof sheeting and other material.

At 5pm Severe Tropical Cyclone Laurence, Category 4, is estimated to be 50 kilometres southeast of Cockatoo Island and 110 kilometres north northeast of Derby.

It is moving south southwest at 11 kilometres per hour.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Laurence has crossed the Kimberley coast southeast of Cockatoo Island.

Very destructive wind gusts are occurring on the Kimberley coast east of Cockatoo Island. Laurence is expected to weaken as it moves overland towards Derby overnight. Gales and destructive winds are likely to extend inland overnight. If the centre passes close by destructive winds are possible in Derby tomorrow morning.

Heavy rain is expected to continue over the north and west Kimberley. Daily rainfall in excess of 100 millimetres is possible near the coast.

The Great Northern Highway will be closed east of Roebuck Road House and west of Fitzroy Crossing and all roads in between will be closed from 9pm until the All Clear is issued.

Further clarification should be sought from Main Roads WA on 138 138 or the local shire.
