Bushfire WATCH AND ACT message for Lloyds Hill area, Wicklow Estate, Dumbarton and Nairn Roads in Toodyay
Wednesday 30 December 2009 – 11:50 AM

ALERT LEVEL:

A bushfire WATCH AND ACT message has been issued for people in or near the Lloyds Hill area, Wicklow Estate, Dumbarton and Nairn Roads in Toodyay.

Homes in Majestica Waters, Lozanda Heights, Vernon Hills, Nottingham Road, Sherwood Road, Folewood Road, Drummondi Drive, Adenanthus Road and Stirlingia Drive have been impacted by the fire. There is no access to the fire zone.

A WATCH AND ACT has also been issued for homes in Dumbarton Road, Nairn Road and Wicklow Estate including Wicklow Road, Link Road, Range Road, Whitfield Road, Boyagerring Road and Dawson Road.

This means that if you are in this area there is a possible threat to live and homes. You need to put your bushfire survival plan into action. If you have decided to leave for a safer place, leave now if the way is clear and take your bushfire survival kit with you. Relocating at the last minute is deadly.

RELOCATION ROUTES:

If you live in the Lloyds Hill area leave via Sandplain Road on to Toodyay Road then Lovers Lane into the Toodyay townsite.

If you live near Nairn Road or the intersection of Dumbarton Road and Northam-Toodyay Road leave via the Northam-Toodyay Road towards Northam.

If you live in or near the Wicklow Estate leave via Goomalling-Toodyay Road and go to Toodyay townsite.

RELOCATION POINTS:

Relocation points have been set up at Toodyay Town Hall on Stirling Terrace. If you have animals you can relocate to the Toodyay Sports Oval off Telegraph Street and Toodyay Street.

The Northam Recreation Centre on Peel Terrace in Northam has now been closed.

BUSHFIRE BEHAVIOUR:

The bushfire has now been contained but sections of the fire are still out of control and unpredictable, but less volatile. Flames are low due to the temperature and humidity.

The location of the fire boundary is south of the Northam-Toodyay Road (between Toodyay Road and Dumbarton Road) and west of the Northam-Toodyay Road (between Dumbarton Road and Nanamoulin Crossing).

FESA was alerted to the fire at 12.59pm yesterday and currently there has been more than 2,900 hectares burnt.

WHAT FIREFIGHTERS ARE DOING:

More than 200 career and volunteer Fire and Rescue Service and Bush Fire Service firefighters are on the scene and are being assisted by State Emergency Service volunteers.

Four helitacs are in Toodyay ready for further deployment if required today.

Emergency services personnel from WA Police, Department of Environment and Conservation, the Shire of Toodyay, the Department of Child Protection and Western Power are working with FESA.

Firefighters have saved homes in the area but some homes have been lost. Powerlines and fences are down.

At first light a structural assessment team arrived in Toodyay to begin assessing homes affected by the fire. A tree felling team has also begun clearing trees from roads and making the area safe.
