Bushfire ADVICE message for Lloyds Hill area, Wicklow Estate, Dumbarton and Nairn Roads in Toodyay
Wednesday 30 December 2009 – 4:00 PM

 

ALERT LEVEL:

A bushfire ADVICE message has been issued for people in or near the Lloyds Hill area, Wicklow Estate, Dumbarton and Nairn Roads in Toodyay.

 

Homes in Majestica Waters, Lozanda Heights, Vernon Hills, Nottingham Road, Sherwood Road, Folewood Road, Drummondi Drive, Adenanthus Road and Stirlingia Drive were impacted by fire.

 

There are no lives or homes threatened by the fire. Although there is no immediate danger you need to keep up to date in case the situation changes.

 

WHAT TO DO:

People living in the area need to be alert and watch for signs of fire.

 

You should:

·      Close all doors and windows

·      Turn off evaporative air conditioners but keep water running through the system if possible

 

People living in the area need to be aware of fire and other emergency services personnel working on site and take their advice.

 

RELOCATION POINTS:

The Toodyay Town Hall on Stirling Terrace remains open. If you have animals you can relocate to the Toodyay Sports Oval off Telegraph Street and Toodyay Street.

 

The Northam Recreation Centre on Peel Terrace in Northam has now been closed.

 

BUSHFIRE BEHAVIOUR:

The bushfire has now been contained but is not under control with small sections still burning.

 

The location of the fire boundary is south of the Northam-Toodyay Road (between Toodyay Road and Dumbarton Road) and west of the Northam-Toodyay Road (between Dumbarton Road and Nanamoulin Crossing).

 

FESA was alerted to the fire at 12.59pm yesterday and currently there has been more than 2,900 hectares burnt.

 

WHAT FIREFIGHTERS ARE DOING:

More than 200 career and volunteer Fire and Rescue Service, Bush Fire Service firefighters and Department of Environment and Conservation firefighters are on the scene and are being assisted by State Emergency Service volunteers.

 

Four helitacs have been mobilised to assist ground crews.

 

Emergency services personnel from WA Police, the Department of Child Protection and Western Power are working with FESA.

 

Firefighters have saved homes in the area but more than 30 have been lost in addition to powerlines, fences and livestock.

 

Urban Search and Rescue teams are half way through assessing homes affected by the fire.

 

A tree felling team is continuing to clear trees from roads to make the area safe.

 

ROAD CLOSURES:

A number of roads remain closed:

  • Sandplain Road from Toodyay Road to Folewood Road
  • Folewood Road from River Road to the Shire Office
  • Dumbarton Road at Nairn Road

Roads into Toodyay now open are:

  • Toodyay-Northam Road – 60 kilometres per hour speed limit
  • Lovers Lane from River Road to Toodyay Road
  • Toodyay-Goomalling Road
  • Toodyay-Bolgart Road

 

Motorists should avoid the area. Further clarification should be sought from WA Police or Main Roads WA on 138 138.

 

POWER:

Western Power has advised that parts of Toodyay are without power. This includes:

  • Red Hill Road
  • Roads in Wicklow Estate
  • Majestica Waters
  • Vernon Hills along to Gingaling Brook
  • Folewood Road
  • Rivers Road

COMMUNITY INFORMATION:

An information session for Toodyay residents will be held at 6pm tonight at the Toodyay Town Hall on Stirling Terrace.

 

Emergency services and Shire personnel will be there.

 

If you are concerned about the location of family and friends in the area call the Red Cross State Inquiry Line on 1800 810 710.

 

People needing to move livestock can ring Toodyay Vet on 9574 5055 who is coordinating this part of the recovery.
