Smoke hazard to motorists in Mount Claremont
Sunday 1 November 2009 – 10:20 AM
People are warned to be extremely careful when driving through the north west corner of Mount Claremont because of smoke from a recent bush fire.

Around 25 career Fire and Rescue Firefighters from 6 stations have worked hard since 2.30pm to bring the fire under control.

Roads that are affected include Underwood Avenue, Rochdale Road and Stevenson Avenue.

If you come across smoke on the road you should:

  • Turn your headlights on to make your vehicle more visible to others
  • Drive slowly
  • Keep a close watch for and follow any directions given by emergency services personnel
  • If you cannot see clearly, pull over to the side of the road, keep your headlights and hazard lights on, and wait until the smoke clears
If you have a respiratory condition you should contact your local doctor or call Health Direct on 1800 022 222.
