Catastrophic fire danger advice for the inland Gascoyne on Saturday
Friday 22 January 2010 – 4:50 PM

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a Catastrophic Fire Danger Rating for Saturday 23 January 2010 for the inland Gascoyne.

This includes the:

  • Shire of  Carnarvon – inland part
  • Shire of  Cue
  • Shire of  Meekatharra
  • Shire of  Menzies – the far west part
  • Shire of  Mount Magnet
  • Shire of  Murchison
  • Shire of  Sandstone
  • Shire of  Shark Bay – inland part
  • Shire of  Upper Gascoyne
  • Shire of  Wiluna – western edge and the south west tip
  • Shire of  Yalgoo

Keep up to date with fire information through local radio, websites and TV. Do not wait for an emergency warning before you act. Your safest option for survival is away from the fire. If you see flames call triple zero.

If a fire starts:

  • It will be unpredictable, difficult to control and move very fast.
  • Flames will be higher than roof tops.
  • Thousands of embers will be blown around your home causing other fires.
  • Spot fires may start 20 kilometres ahead of the main fire.

If you live adjacent to bush with high fuel loads then the bushfire risk is increased. You should:

  • Put your bushfire survival plan into action.
  • Put your survival first and leave if a fire starts.
  • Be aware that well prepared, well constructed and actively defended homes are highly unlikely to be safe. If you are in doubt about defending your home, leave.
