Update: Smoke hazard to motorists in Dalyup, near Esperance
FESA advises that the bushfire that started in Dalyup and closed the South West Highway is now under control.
However people are warned to remain extremely careful when driving through the area because of smoke and low visibility.
The South Coast Highway between Dalyup Road and the Gibson-Dalyup Road remains closed. Detours are in place.
More than thirty volunteer Bush Fire Brigade and DEC firefighters have worked hard to get the fire under control and saved the Dalyup Community Hall.
Firefighters are working on cutting down dangerous trees along the South Coast Highway. Once this has been completed the highway will be reopened. This is expected to take at least another hour.
If you come across smoke on the road you should:
- Turn your headlights on to make your vehicle more visible to others
- Drive slowly
- Keep a close watch for and follow any directions given by emergency services personnel
- If you cannot see clearly, turn around and drive to a clear area. Pull over to the side of the road, keep your headlights and hazard lights on and wait until the smoke clears
