Smoke hazard to motorists in Dalyup, near Esperance
Thursday 22 October 2009 – 4:30 PM

People are warned to be extremely careful when driving through the Dalyup area near Esperance because of smoke from a bushfire.

The South Coast Highway is closed between Dalyup Road and the Gibson-Dalyup Road. Detours are in place.

The fire is burning on both sides of the highway near the Dalyup River Bridge and is moving in a westerly direction.

Firefighters are currently protecting the Dalyup Community Hall. There is no threat to lives.

If you come across smoke on the road you should:

  • Turn your headlights on to make your vehicle more visible to others
  • Drive slowly
  • Keep a close watch for and follow any directions given by emergency services personnel
  • If you cannot see clearly, turn around and drive to a clear area. Pull over to the side of the road, keep your headlights and hazard lights on and wait until the smoke clears
