2010 Firefighting Award finalists announced
Tuesday 28 September 2010 – 2:00 PM

West Australian volunteer and career firefighters have been recognised with the announcement of this year’s Firefighting Awards finalists.

The 11 finalists represent a broad cross section of the service and awards will be presented in four categories.

FESA Chief Operations Officer Craig Hynes said finalists and all nominees should be proud of their efforts of getting to this point.

“They have all put so much effort into their job that someone noticed enough to nominate them,” he said.

Mr Hynes said the Firefighting Awards were a great opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the work of all firefighters throughout Western Australia.

“Last financial year, our 27,000 career and volunteer firefighters responded to more than 27,000 incidents. That is 75 incidents our firefighters attend each and every day.

These men and women go out to protect us and our homes from danger and reduce the risk.

Our firefighters fulfil a noble role in their communities.

Nominees were judged on criteria which included devotion to duty, kindness, understanding, compassion and courage in the line of duty.

Other aspects which were taken into consideration were whether the candidate had contributed to the efficiency and growth of firefighting, their achievement in community education or community based fire prevention programs; and any role in development or implementation of a new idea or initiative.

The awards will be presented at a breakfast ceremony at Burswood Entertainment Complex on 3 October.
