Emergency services volunteers recognised at awards ceremony
Sunday 31 July 2011 – 10:30 AM

The outstanding efforts of fire and emergency services volunteers have been recognised at an awards ceremony held at the Burswood Entertainment Complex.

The 2011 FESA Volunteer Emergency Services (VES) and Volunteer Fire Services (VFS) Awards brought together a diverse group of people who all give their time to protect their communities.

FESA Chief Executive Officer Jo Harrison-Ward said that Western Australia was fortunate to have such a strong group of volunteers in the emergency services.

“There are more than 1000 VES and VFS personnel across Western Australia,” she said.

“While each volunteer plays a vitally important role, the purpose of the awards is to seek out and acknowledge those who go above and beyond in ensuring the safety of the community.”

The 2011 VES/VFS Awards consists of three categories; Outstanding VES Unit/VFS Brigade, Outstanding Volunteer Member Award and the FESA Award for Excellence.

This year’s finalists included units and volunteers from Waroona, York, Morawa, Coral Bay, Bullsbrook and Tambellup.

Ms Harrison-Ward said emergency services volunteers had faced a host of challenging disasters over the past year.

“The beginning of 2011 saw a dust storm in York, Northam and surrounding towns, tropical cyclones off the coast of Port Hedland, Onslow and Exmouth and flooding in the Wheatbelt, Fitzroy Crossing and the Warmun Community,” she said.

“There were also more than 6500 bushfires this season, including the devastating Lake Clifton, Red Hill and Roleystone bushfires in January and February.

“Throughout these testing times volunteers have worked hard in their respective roles, providing much needed assistance to the community and supporting FESA personnel and career firefighters.

“Their commitment and selflessness does not go by unnoticed and these awards recognise, not just the winners, but all our VES and VFS volunteers.”
