Great Northern Highway north of New Norcia remains closed due to smoke
Tuesday 24 November 2009 – 11:25 AM

Motorists travelling along Great Northern Highway in the south of the WA are being urged to take an alternate route due to an earlier bushfire on the west side of the road.

The bushfire is now under control but the highway remains closed between Mount Yule and the Waddington-Piawaning Road turn off due to smoke and emergency services personnel continuing their work.

The closure is expected to be in place until 9pm this evening.

Volunteer firefighters from the Shire of Victoria Plains and the Shire of Moora bushfire brigades worked hard to bring the fire under control. They were supported by FESA and WA Police.

Further clarification on road closures should be sought from WA Police or Main Roads WA on 138 138.

Motorists in the area should drive slowly with their headlights on, be aware of emergency services personnel working on site and take their advice.
