Bushfire threatening Great Northern Highway north of New Norcia
Tuesday 24 November 2009 – 4:25 AM

Motorists travelling along Great Northern Highway in the south of the WA are being urged to take an alternate route due to a bushfire burning on the west side of the road.

The highway is closed between Mount Yule and the Waddington-Piawaning Road turn off. The closure is expected to be in place until 7pm this evening.

Volunteer firefighters from the Shire of Victoria Plains and the Shire of Moora bushfire brigades are working to bring the fire under control.

The Shire of Victoria Plains is managing the fire with assistance from FESA and WA Police.

Further clarification on road closures should be sought from WA Police or Main Roads WA on 138 138.

Motorists in the area should drive slowly with their headlights on, be aware of emergency services personnel working on site and take their advice.
