NW residents to hear first hand about upcoming wet season
Tuesday 14 October 2014 – 12:15 PM
With the Wet Season only a few weeks away people in the State's North West are being urged to carry out preparations that may protect them from the destruction cyclones and floods can cause.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) and the Bureau of Meteorology are holding a series of public meetings in the Pilbara this week to brief people on the season ahead.

DFES Country Assistant Commissioner Graham Swift said the tour was an opportunity for people in the North West to find out more about tropical cyclones and floods and how to prepare their family and property.

"Now is the time to plan and prepare for the upcoming wet season,” Assistant Commissioner Swift said.

"Preparations can be as simple as cleaning up and securing loose items around the home, trimming trees and preparing an emergency kit that includes a portable battery operated radio.”

"Talk to your family about your cyclone plan and make sure everyone knows what to do at each alert level.”

"This includes having a plan to relocate early. When a Yellow Alert is issued, you should relocate to the building where you will shelter until the cyclone passes.”

The community meetings are open to all people who live or travel through the area, and want more information on how they could best prepare for the season and keep their families safe.
