Fierce competition on display at annual firefighting championships
Bassendean Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service (VFRS) took out top honours at the 113th annual WA VFRS Association Easter State Championships on the weekend.
Held at Gilbert Fraser Reserve in North Fremantle, the championships showcased the skills and teamwork of VFRS firefighters from across the State.
More than 170 firefighters from 29 teams took part and Marc Papalia from Bassendean VFRS won the Champion’s Trophy for an impressive eighth consecutive time.
The events have evolved from firefighting training exercises at the turn of the twentieth century.
Using equipment such as hydrants, hoses, reels and ladders, volunteers showcase their speed, agility, teamwork and leadership.
The championships offer an opportunity to acknowledge the huge contribution volunteer firefighters make to protecting the community, with the VFRS responding to a range of incidents including bushfires, structure fires, road crashes, chemical incidents and other emergencies.
