Preparation, communication key to recovering from natural disaster, psychologists say
Western Australia has experienced many devastating natural disasters over the years, from Cyclone Vance over Exmouth in 1999 to the more recent deadly bushfires near Esperance and in the South West.
In the past two years, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) has responded to more than 7,000 blazes across the state, and with conditions ripe for another severe bushfire season, authorities could have a busy start to 2017.
But how do those who are directly impacted by a disaster recover any sense of normality following the loss of homes, livelihoods, and sometimes life?
According to the Australian Psychological Society (APS), practice and preparation are key factors in dealing with the intense stress associated with living through a disaster, and can lay the foundation for a return to normality.
