International Firefighters’ Day was commemorated on Monday 4 May 2020 to remember all Western Australian firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The day provided an opportunity to reflect on the brave and selfless actions of the firefighters whose lives have been lost, as well as the men and women who continue to put themselves at risk to protect and serve their community.
Although restrictions due to COVID-19 meant the day was observed without the annual formal memorial service at the Firefighters’ Memorial Grove in Kings Park, the day was still widely commemorated by DFES, the families and colleagues of the fallen firefighters and the WA community.
Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Darren Klemm AFSM and Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Francis Logan acknowledged the service men and women who had lost their lives and expressed their gratitude to all current serving firefighters in a video to mark International Firefighters’ Day.
Commissioner Klemm reflected on the importance of recognising the sacrifices and commitment to the community made by all firefighters and asked everyone to take time to reflect on the contribution of firefighters to the safety of the community of Western Australia.
“It is important on International Firefighters’ Day that we honour the contributions made by firefighters here in Western Australia and across the world,” said Commissioner Klemm.
“The impact of our fallen firefighters and their sacrifice lives on in the communities they defended and the lives they saved. The legacy of those who have fallen in the line of duty continues through all of us.
“Over this past bushfire season, the spirit and tenacity of firefighters and the emergency services community shone through brighter than ever.”
Australia was devastated by bushfires in December 2019 to February 2020 and the day was also an opportunity to reflect on the nine lives lost in the New South Wales, Victorian and South Australian bushfires.
The Fallen Firefighters’ Honour Roll recognises the 69 Western Australian firefighters who lost their lives while performing their role in protecting the community.
