Celebrating the orange army on WOW Day
Wednesday 10 May 2017 – 9:30 AM

Across Western Australia more than 2,000 State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers give up their time throughout the year to respond to storms, cyclones, floods and search and rescues.

Wednesday 10 May is Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW Day), an opportunity to say thank you to the volunteers for the service they provide.

In conjunction with National Volunteer Week, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) is encouraging the WA community to join in the celebrations.

Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Wayne Gregson APM said wearing a splash of orange or hosting an orange-themed morning tea for the annual national event is a simple way to recognise the great contribution made by SES volunteers.

“The SES are integral to our states emergency preparedness, including supporting our efforts during major bushfires, floods, storms and cyclones.” Commissioner Gregson said.

In the past year, WA’s SES volunteers have spent in excess of 17,500 hours responding to more than 570 incidents, helping to keep the community safe.

“Volunteers also commit to many hours of training, maintaining their skills and ensuring they are as prepared as possible for when an emergency occurs,” Commissioner Gregson said.”

“On behalf of DFES and the community, thank you to all of the SES volunteers for the contribution you make as volunteers.”

A number of activities are taking place on WOW Day including an information stall at Curtin University prominent landmarks such as Elizabeth Quay, Perth Concert Hall and Council House will be lit up with brilliant orange. The well-known Eliza statue in Nedlands will wear an SES uniform to mark the day.
