Firefighter Recruitment - Career

Career photo

The role of firefighter is one of many we have in our department. Becoming a firefighter is the first step in what can be a diverse and stimulating career.

If you are selected from the pool to attend the trainee firefighter school, you will undertake a 19 week intensive training course held onsite at the Western Australia Fire and Emergency Services Academy) in Forrestfield.

When you successfully pass the school, you will be promoted to the rank of 5th Class Firefighter and commence on shift.

For the next five years, you will progress through the Firefighter Development Program.

As you gain experience as a firefighter on station and progress through your professional development, you will be promoted through the ranks up to 1st Class Firefighter, then Senior Firefighter. There are also opportunities to specialise in areas such as Urban Search and Rescue, Training and Instructing, Aerial Rescue, Air Intelligence, Communications, Analysis, Logistics and Fire Investigation.

DFES supports career progression through the ranks and there are pathways that can take you through to more senior leadership and management roles.
