Volunteer Training

Volunteer Firefighter Training

DFES provides training for Fire and Rescue Service volunteers, Volunteer Emergency Service, Volunteer Fire Service and local government bush fire brigade volunteers in WA and ensures that there is a uniform level of training that provides the competencies for firefighters to undertake operations safely, efficiently and confidently.

The Volunteer Firefighter Training Program (VFTP) currently consists of over 44 formal training courses with many of these courses providing volunteers with the option to obtain national recognition as detailed in “Obtaining National Units of Competency” published on DFES’s Volunteer Portal. VFTP courses include:

  • Introduction to firefighting
  • Introduction to Bush Fire Firefighting
  • Advanced Bush Fire Firefighting
  • Structural Firefighting
  • Breathing Apparatus
  • Road Crash Rescue
  • On-Road and Off-Road Driving
  • Crew Leader Bush Fire

The training courses are designed to provide volunteer firefighters with effective fire prevention and response skills.

State Emergency Services

DFES trains State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers and staff to efficiently respond to the effects of storms, floods and
cyclones.

SES volunteers are also trained to undertake road crash rescue, land and air searches and land rescues (such as cliff and cave rescues).

SES volunteer training includes:

  • first aid
  • map reading and navigation
  • land search techniques
  • storm damage techniques
  • flood boat rescue
  • general rescue
  • radio communications
  • leadership
  • management
  • driving vehicles for emergencies
  • road accident rescue
  • single rope techniques (abseiling) and vertical rescue observation from aircraft and supply dropping

 

Volunteer Marine Rescue Services

DFES develops and delivers training and assessment strategies/programs that meet organisational and individual training and development needs for Volunteer Marine Rescue Services (VMRS) volunteers, including managing internal and external training pathways/frameworks and provides advice and support to VMRS Groups in relation to training.

VMRS training includes:

  • Occupational safety and health at sea
  • Marine radio operation
  • Coastal navigation
  • Radar
  • Work team communications
  • Engineering knowledge
  • First aid
