Education and Heritage Volunteers

Two volunteer teams work with the Education and Heritage Branch, the DFES Education and Heritage Centre in Perth and the DFES Vintage Fleet Restoration Team workshop at Forrestfield.

Each of the volunteers bring great personal and professional skills and experience to the team and enjoy working together to provide a fantastic educational and fun experience for the community.

If you enjoy engaging with children, tourists and community groups or have an interest in natural hazards or the history of Western Australian emergency services, you may find volunteering at the centre a very rewarding experience.

If you are interested in joining us as a volunteer, please contact the Centre Manager, by phoning (08) 9395 9862 or via email at  educationandheritage@dfes.wa.gov.au

DFES’s Education and Heritage Centre

The centre is supported by a dedicated team of volunteers who carry out day-to-day running of the Centre. The volunteers play a crucial role in operating the reception area, delivery of our school programs and group tours as well as other duties at the centre.

Behind the scenes, volunteers can participate in curatorial activities, assisting the Centre Manager with displays, research and the historical collection.

The centre houses a large archive and object collection comprising photographs, microfiche, operational records, equipment and uniforms. Some of the centre’s volunteers conduct research cataloguing and conservation.

Volunteering with the Vintage Fleet Restoration Team

The Vintage Fleet Restoration Team has been in operation since the early 1980’s and is comprised of former firefighters including retired chief officers and Superintendents and interested members of the public. The group carries out maintenance and restoration on 23 appliances (trucks) in the vintage fleet, contributing hundreds of hours of time on a voluntary basis.
